Timeless Values: Fasting

February 6, 2012 in Adult Ministries

The Life in the Spirit Sunday School class is going to be taking an in-depth look at the spiritual disciplines based on Bishop King’s Ten Timeless Values.

The highlight of the Christian year is Easter. Lent is the 40 day season when we prepare ourselves for Easter. Traditionally fasting is a discipline associated with Lent. This year the season of Lent begins on Wednesday, February 22nd.

In response, this week we will begin an in-depth study on the discipline of fasting. This will include answer to many questions you may have about fasting. Exactly what is fasting and why should we do it? How do you fast? What is the role of prayer while you fast? What is the role of worship while you fast? What is the role of good works while you fast? As we called to not just be hearers of the Word but also doers of the Word, those attending these classes will be encouraged to undertake a Lenten fast.

This study on fasting will continue throughout the season of Lent. Different class members will be will be teaching on the different aspects of fasting. Please join us as we undertake this journey together. We know you will be blessed! We meet on the 2nd floor in the classroom to the right before the family restroom.

Socks-Socks-Socks

February 3, 2012 in Adult Ministries

Don’t forget to bring new tube socks for residents of Princeton Health & Rehab.  They need them for about 70 women and 20 men.  You can leave them in the box in the hallway.  If you don’t have time to shop then you might consider making a donation, and we will buy the socks for you.  Just leave your gift with Betty in the church office (M-F, 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon and 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.) by February 18.

New Study: Timeless Values of Life in the Spirit

January 31, 2012 in Adult Ministries

“Superficiality is the curse of our age…. The desperate need today is not for a greater number of intelligent people, or gifted people, but for deep people.”
-Richard Foster, “Celebration of Discipline”

“The spiritual life is first of all a life.It is not merely something to be known and studied, it is to be lived.”
-Thomas Merton, “Thoughts in Solitude”

“Everybody thinks of changing humanity and nobody thinks of changing himself.”
–Leo Tolstoy

This study is an invitation for you to make an intentional effort to cultivate the kind of life in which God can bring change. It is an invitation for you to train yourself in the practices for growing in the likeness of Christ. These practices have historically been referred to as the spiritual disciplines.

A farmer is helpless to grow grain; all he can do is provide the right conditions for the growing of grain. He cultivates the ground, he plants the seed, he waters the plants, and then natural forces of the earth take over and up comes the grain. This is the way it is with the Spiritual Disciplines–they are a way of sowing to the Spirit.

Our study is adapted from Bishop King’s 10 Timeless Values.  This is a season in our Sunday School class where we will be sharing the reasonability of teaching.  We will be dividing up these values, working through them individually, and then sharing what we found and encouraging each other to live them out!

We want to invite you to join us at 9:30am on Sundays.  Our class is on the 2nd floor on the right before the family restroom.
