Training (Value 5)

Training produces competence, competence produces confidence, and confidence produces success.

Ken Houts, from YOU ARE A MIRACLE WAITING TO HAPPEN

Professional baseball players show up early on game day for batting practice. Now, wouldn’t you think that after years of training in little league, high school, college, minor league teams, and for however long they have been in the Major League, that this would be enough?

They know how to hit a ball with a bat. But what makes them successful as a professional is realizing they have to do more. They go over the basics of the game every day and practice, practice, practice.

As Christians we need to realize that, if we are to do our best for the Lord, then our witness and our work is important enough to learn how to do it better. Training is a value because it helps us grow in our serving.

On Wednesdays we are in training from 6:10 until 6:55 P.M. each week. Join us for our “Harvest Study.” For several weeks we have been studying the book, “YOU ARE A MIRACLE WAITING TO HAPPEN,” by Ken Houts. This week will be the last session of this study but next week Kathy Hershman will begin teaching on “RELEASING THE SPIRITUAL GIFTS.”

This new study will help us to find out what our gifts are and how we may work out of these gifts. True fulfillment in our spiritual work requires that we let God work in and through us as He has gifted us for the job to which He has called us.

Every Christian is a minister. What is your ministry? Do you know? Do you feel qualified to do your work?

We don’t have any batting cages but practice begins each Wednesday at 6:10 P.M. I hope to see you there.

                                                                                                            God bless,  David

Sunday, October 11, at 7:00 P.M., we will have a worship service together with all the United Methodist churches in Caldwell and Lyon Counties. This service will be held at Eddyville UMC and will involve persons from all the churches. Our District Superintendent, Dr. Jay Smith, will be speaking. We are going to take the church bus, so if you want to ride, be at the church parking lot by 6:15.  We will leave at 6:30.

Thursday, October 15, the Children’s Council has planned a family outing to Cave-in-Rock. Cave-in-Rock in southern Illinois sits atop the high bluffs overlooking the scenic Ohio River.  The heavily wooded park is named for the 55-foot-wide cave that was carved out of the limestone rock by water thousands of years ago. Trails winding along the riverbank offer views of riverboats, barges and other river scenes.
We will be leaving at 10:00 a.m.  Everyone is welcome.  Your family needs to pack a cooler with their lunch and snacks for the day and bring your own car.  Some people are staying all day, but you will be able to leave whenever you need to.

Please take advantage of this special opportunity to attend a matinee performance of “Variety!  Music, Memories & More Christmas Spectacular” at the Badgett Playhouse in Grand Rivers, KY, on Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2009.
Ogden has the two center rows of seats reserved with the group rate of $19 per ticket.  We have to turn in our final count of those attending by Oct. 17th, so it is imperative that you call the church office ASAP (365-3528) to reserve your place.  You will need to pay for your ticket before Oct. 17th, also.  Make checks ($19) to Ogden UMC, because only one check will be written to the playhouse.  Please feel free to invite a friend to attend this performance with you.  We must guarantee at least 20 people in our group to receive the group rate ticket price.  If you pay for a ticket and find that you are unable to attend the show, you will receive a voucher to attend another performance that is good for one year.
We will eat lunch at the Cracker Barrel in Calvert City on our way to Grand Rivers.  More details to follow.  Questions?  Call Marty Presler (365-9881).
