Last Sunday we talked about our words and how they can build people up or bring them down. In Ephesians Paul says:
Let no evil talk come out of your mouths, but only what is useful for building up, as there is need, so that your words may give grace to those who hear.
Ephesians 4:29, NRSV
Have you ever stopped to think that your words might be an avenue through which God’s grace may come to someone? God seems to work that way a lot.
Oh, occasionally a person hears God speak to them in an audible voice. This certainly happened in the Bible, and it happens today as well; but more often than that God speaks to us through the words of others.
I heard about a preacher who gave an altar call and a young man came forward to seek Christ in a new way in his life. After the service the preacher asked what words he had spoken which made the difference. To the preacher’s surprise, the man said it was when he heard, “And now my second point is…”
The preacher was shocked. That was just a transition between thoughts in the sermon. How could that have had such an impact?
The young man explained, “I came here looking for help. My life has taken several wrong turns. Things have gotten pretty bad and I even had thoughts of ending it all. Then, when I heard the words, ‘My second point is,’ it struck me that my life could have a second point as well. It doesn’t have to end this way. With God’s help I can see things turn around.”
Isn’t God great? He can take our words and work miracles. Give God your words.
God bless, David
