Mrs. Miksch received a call this last week revealing that the church’s chimes were going off right on the hour. The problem was that the hour was 3:00 in the morning.
We’re not sure just how it happened. Maybe it was when the electricity was off during the recent ice storm. Of course, we just had a change to Daylight Saving time as well. Whatever the cause, the computer on our carillon has gotten its days and nights mixed up. I understand, because I’ve had that problem before too.
Time, of course, is a purely human invention contrived to help us order our day. It wasn’t that long ago when different towns had different times. It must have been very confusing until our current system was set up.
I’ve heard of Bible teachers who try to use certain passages of scripture to date back to creation. Others have ventured forth a theory for the coming of the end of time and just when that might be. Personally, I think the best scripture on time is Psalm 90:
1 Lord, you have been our dwelling place in all
generations.
2 Before the mountains were brought forth,
or ever you had formed the earth and the world,
from everlasting to everlasting you are God.
3 You turn us back to dust, and say, “Turn back, you
Mortals.”
For a thousand years in your sight are like
yesterday when it is past,
or like a watch in the night. (NRSV)
We’ll fix the church’s carillon, or at least turn it off until we can. But time itself is a temporary thing of which God is in charge.
God bless,
David
